Introduction to Carnidae

Carnus hemapterus, female, dorsal viewThe Carnidae are quite small (1-2 mm) black flies and probably due to their small size, they have not attracted a great degree of study.

Carnidae of the Lake Kerkini region in Greece

Introduction

The Carnidae fauna of Greece is poorly known, with only Meoneura graeca Hennig, 1972, M. obscurella Fallén, 1823, M. prima Becker 1905, and ?M. vagans Fallén, 1823 recorded (Strobl, 1902, Hennig 1937 & 1972, Sabrosky 1959, Papp, 1984). However, thanks to the efforts of Gordon Ramel, who maintained several Malaise as well as other traps near Lake Kerkini in northern Greece, close to the border to Bulgaria, this has now changed.

World Catalog of the Family Carnidae (Diptera, Schizophora)

This manuscript is submitted to the MYIA series and will be published in MYIA 12. While the basic work for this catalog had been done before 2002, a thorough review and the formating were done as part of my Smithsonanian fellowship working on the BioSystematic Database of World Diptera in 2005.

Key to genera of Carnidae

1. Wing usually broken off, leaving a short stub; if wing complete, crossvein dm-cu absent. Female with abdominal sternites 1-5 absent; membrane with numerous setiferous sclerotized spots.

- Wing complete; posterior crossvein dm-cu present. Female with all abdominal sternites present; membrane usually sparsely bristled.

Diptera Classification Notes

Modern attempts at Diptera family classification are based on the work of Willi Hennig (1948, 1952, 1954, 1958, 1965, 1971), which was summarized in this treatment in the Handbook of Zoology in 1973. This was the last united version of Diptera family classification. Since then numerous papers on various groups have been published.
