Minimal user role: contributor
- To view a taxon page click on a term in the 'Diptera Classification' menu on the left side. This will open the child taxa of this term as well as the taxon panel for this term. To find a taxon panel you can also click on 'Taxonomy' above the search field, enter a term and search.
- To add data to the taxon page use the 'Content' menu on the left side. When you hover with the mouse over one of the menu items a plus icon will appear. Click this icon to add a new node of this content type. Next to the plus icon an import icon may appear for some users.
- To add a description or taxonomic data click on the 'Add a description node' icon (see above). (see also 'How to create descriptions faster ')
- Fill in as many data as you have. Some fields are aggregated into groups and you have to click on the group name (e.g. Taxonomic data, Description: Adult) to extend all the fields.
- Choose a creative commons licence ('Attribution Non-commercial Share Alike' is usually the best for our data).
- If you are part of a group you can select the group this description should be part of under 'Groups'. However, you should also select 'Public' because otherwise only members of your group will be able to view this description.
- Click on 'Next'
- Under 'Discovered tags' you can choose with which terms this description should be tagged with. Under 'Terms to use', the correct taxon should be listed if you used this name in one of the fields. Drag 'n' drop terms you don't want in the 'terms to ignore' box. You can add other terms by entering the taxon name in the 'Additional terms...' field (for species you need to enter the genus name first!). A list of terms to choose from will appear as you type. Choose the correct one. If you need more terms contact i.brake@nhm.ac.uk. Please tag nodes only with the term for this taxon, not the higher hierarchy! Otherwise a description of a species might appear on the taxon page of the family, for example, and screw up the view for this family. Only for images is makes sense to tag some of the best images with the higher classification so that they can serve as examples for these taxa.
- Save.
- To add images click on the 'Add an image node' icon and follow the instructions (see How to annotate images). You can also add specimens, bibliographic citations and links to other websites. Check the FAQ at the Scratchpad site for instructions. To add a pdf of a paper, add the bibliographic citation and under 'File attachments' attach the file. If you have a bunch of citations in EndNote Tagged, RIS, EndNote 7 XML, EndNote 8+ XML or BibTex format you can also send me the file (i.brake@nhm.ac.uk) and I will import it under your name.
- To select which data to show in a panel, go to the taxon page click on 'sort' in the title line of the respective panel. Just drag and drop items to show, hide and reorder content. If a panel has been curated before, new images will not necessarily show up. Therefore it is useful to always check and if need be curate the respective panels after an image upload. However, the sort feature doesn't work properly at the moment!
