Sylvicola fenestralis (Scopoli, 1763)

General description: 

Small to medium (6-10 mm) flies resembling true crane flies (Tipulidae); head with ocelli (three) and medium-length antennae; wings and thorax patterned with some spots. (http://diptera.myspecies.info/files/scopoli_1763_0.pdf)

Morphology: 

Head: head with ocelli (three) and medium-length antennae

Thorax: thorax patterned with some spots

Wing: wings patterned with some spots; wings broad with only one complete anal vein (A1), three radial veins and three medial veins

Larva: Eucephalic, vermiform and amphineustic; length from 10-14 mm.

Size: 

Length: 6-10 mm

Distribution: 

Washington and Idaho, to California, Ontario and Nova Scotia, south to Pennsylvania and New Jersey
