Small flies, 1-5 mm long, usually black, often dull or subshining. Usually with 2 or 3 orbital setae, 2 medioclinate frontal setae, proclinate setula between supra-antennal seta and eye margin, pair of setulae on lunule, and four pseudotracheae; male terminalia with postgonites lost
