Hemeromyia remotinervis Strobl, 1902
Dubious Greek specimens collected in June/July in Malaise traps; 65-750 m.
3 dc (sometimes 4?); 1 prsc; proboscis long; ocellar triangle narrow reaching to anterior 2/3 of frons; gena height about 1/4 eye height
Since Hemeromyia longirostris was described by Carles-Tolrá in 1992, specimens which were formerly identified as H. remotinervis have been identified as H. longirostris (Papp 2003). Greek specimens recently studied show intermediate characters between both species with the proboscis being shorter than in H. longirostris but longer than in Hendel's (1920) drawing of the H. remotinervis type. In most specimens the dorsocentral setae are missing, but one specimen exhibits one presutural fourth dc in contrast to there being only 3 dc in H. remotinervis. The Greek specimens further agree with H. longirostris in the black 'tooth' on the distiphallus, a character which is unknown for H. remotinervis. Without a revision of the genus it is not possible to decide whether H. remotinervis and longirostris are actually two species or just variations of one species. As long as this species complex has not been reviewed I prefer to use the older name, Hemeromyia remotinervis.
