Black except for reddish orange anterior two-fifths of frons and yellow lunule, halter yellow. 3 dc.
Head with frons subshiny, ocellar triangle shiny and rather distinct, barely over half the length of frons, ocellar tubercle grey microtomentose; gena moderately broad, posteriorly 0.38 and anteriorly 0.21x head height, in middle 0.3x eye height. 3 vibrissae; postocellar setae weak, slightly lateroclinate. Thorax dark or brownish gray microtomentose; 3dc; prsc weak, shorter than anterior dc; pteropleuron bare. Wing light brown, halter knob yellow. 1.5 mm. Legs slender and relatively long, basitarsi notably slender and elongate, the hind basitarsus two-thirds the length of hind tibia and nearly as long as remainder of tarsus; fore femur with large and strong preapical posteroventral seta on distal fourth. Abdomen microtomentose anterodorsally and shiny apically and laterally; ninth tergite large and knoblike; terminalia as in photos. (Description after Sabrosky 1959)
Meoneura prima has been collected and reared from various kinds of bird and mammal faeces including herbivores and omnivores and was also found in bird's nests and on carrion and fungi. It has been collected on banana bait.
