SUMMARY
Slender or plump flies, 2-10 mm long; color black, gray, yellow, orange, or brown, or combinations of these, sometimes marked with shining blue or green. Wing clear or brownish, always with a relatively large cell cup. Male eyes holoptic, female eyes dichoptic. Hind tarsus usually enlarged or flattened and the sexes usually differ in structure of the tarsi. Sexual dimorphism is frequent in a wide spectrum of characters.
