SUMMARY
Small but rather robust flies, best diagnosed by the short, dilated hind basitarsus. Body 0.7-5.5 mm long, brown to blackish, sometimes with yellow, orange or reddish head, thorax, legs and/or markings on them; head, thorax and abdomen often with characteristic microtomentose pattern; wings only rarely spotted or legs variegated.
